Vanessa Billy (Lifting the Earth, 2012)
The young Swiss artist Vanessa Billy creates thoughtful works focusing on the economics of construction. By folding concrete into pancakes, for instance, she transforms communal pavement stones into minimalist sculptures, or connects two trees in a park in London with a plastic sheet more commonly used to shield construction sites from curious onlookers. Her contribution to ART AND THE CITY carries the title "Lifting the Earth": a construction crane at Turbinenplatz attempting to grasp the earth in its hook—a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the omnipresent construction going on in Zürich-West.
